What is berberine?
Present in various plants such as Coptis chinensis and Berberis aristata, berberine is a natural alkaloid with multiple beneficial effects on health.
Berberine is particularly used to lower blood glucose levels and improve insulin response in type 2 diabetes. In addition to its effect on glucose metabolism, it also improves the lipid profile, lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
These heart-healthy supplements also have a beneficial effect on the liver. Some studies have shown that they reduce the toxic effects of alcohol, as well as preventing the onset of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
How to take berberine
It's recommended to take these berberine-based cardiovascular supplements twice daily, with or immediately after main meals, with plenty of water. Although berberine is considered safe, it's recommended not to take too much, as it may not be absorbed by the intestines and cause cramps and diarrhea.
For this reason, its administration is divided into two daily doses. Although it has an important effect on blood sugar control, replacing diabetes medications with berberine is not recommended.
